The most fun hair trend to try in 2023 is colour, which is arguably the most exciting to experiment with no exception. There are plenty of options to choose from if you're looking to change up your hair colour in the year ahead. Expect to see new takes on classic blondes and brunette shades and if nostalgia is your thing, here's something for you too with Barbie-inspired blonde back into the spotlight.
1. Rich Brunette: - Brunette means a person having brown hair. So rich brunette is characterised as a shiny, defined and enhanced version of that brunette shade with hints of golden blonde throughout.
2. Curl lights: - This one is a form of balayage which means the highlights will not go all the way to the roots and will mostly focus on the mid-lengths to ends. It is a great way to play with colour, texture and tone.
3. Copper Curl: - In this, the effortlessly sexy nature of natural curls matches perfectly with warm and striking red colours.
4. Warm Red-Brown: - If copper feels a bit too daring but you still want to dip your toes into the red tones, consider asking your colourist to try a warm red-brown. According to Irena De Leon, hairstylist and global ambassador for Dyson warm-red- brown is the perfect transition into the new season. It's a more toned-down version of the copper trend," she says.
5. Toasted Caramel: - Not ready to give up the blonde you've been rocking all summer but want a slight change in tonality? Opt for some gold tones instead of icy cool blonde. By adding gold to the formula, it will richen the colour and add more depth says Schindler who adds that this is a great way to start transitioning into a little darker, richer colour." The great thing with this colour is that it can be created by doing a full head of baby lights, playing off of existing colour placement or enhancing the colour with a money piece and pops of colour on the ends," she says.
6. Dimensional low-maintenance highlights: - If you aren't looking to do a total overhaul, and also want to keep your upkeep minimal, consider asking your stylist for a dimensional low-maintenance highlight. Kim says this will allow you to have a darker root that will prolong the regrowth. Overall colourists are using the highlighted canvas from summer deeper tone for fall. This is also the healthier option for all hair types, the less processing on the hair, the better.
7. Auburn Spice: - Looking for that apple-picking fall girl aesthetic? Consider trying out this PSL-inspired colour. “Adding warm tones into the hair is one of my favourite ways to transition my summer blondes into a fall auburn spice," says Schindler. If the existing colour placement still looks good, play with the idea of a warm colour melt. Shindler likes to start with a rich Auburn colour on the roots which she then melts down to a golden copper. This is a great way to show clients versatility with hair colour, she says.
8. Cherry-Cola: - Wile Perkins insists that sweet strawberry blondes and copper shades are not going away anytime soon, she explains. To see an insurgence of vibrant violet and red hues in dark red brunette, creating a cherry-cola look with mahogany tones that sit between red and violet. One way to try this trend Perkin explains is to add a pop of red over brunette hair with a temporary mask like the Madison red colour therapy mask in Rubino. You’ll see the depth of the brunette style the same, but the red sheer shine through in the light, she says.
9. Honey Highlights: - When you're looking for a low-maintenance look, it’s important to think about colour contrast. In other words, it's important to consider your natural base tone against your highlights or low lights. A warm honey blonde like the one pictured above looks beautiful against a darker root and gives the hair a natural-looking brightness.
10. Gingerbread / Caramel highlights: - Warm reds and coppers are pretty old news in terms of fall colour trends, but this fall’s take on it is far from the norm. This fall's trend of red tones is leaning more towards soft brown meets red. These gingerbread caramel tones can give any base tone a warm rich depth. One suggested way to wear this trend is to keep your roots natural and keep the tone to your ends or money pieces around the face. A little bit of warmth in your hair can keep your skin glowing even in the dark months.
11. Blended Ombre: - An ombre is a wonderful hairstyle but there are endless options for colour. However, the go-to-ombre for those that want to keep their hair colour as natural looking as possible would be a blonde tone like the one shown above. An ombre also requires very little maintenance and offers an easy grow-out process. An ombre will look great on any base tone as long as your stylist is well-versed in the technique. The brightness should generally start right beneath the bangs but some stylists are starting to blend some colour into the bangs as well.
12. Peachy Rose: - whilst Ash and platinum blonde hair have been more popular in recent years, 2023 will see the rise of peachy rose blonde. This is a perfect shade for those looking to make a fun and colourful change and is a great way to transition from winter to brighter spring and summer. Whilst, this trend is best for blonde hair, as pink takes more easily to light hair, it is still possible to achieve this look in darker hair colours.
